    Linville Gorge Wilderness Area

    The Linville Gorge Wilderness Area is a 12,000 acre part of the Pisgah National Forest in Western North Carolina. It is formed by the Linville River dropping 2,000 feet between the Jonas Ridge and Linville Mountain.  It has steep and rugged terrain, uncut forest, rock formations, wildflowers, summits, and waterfalls. It is a popular destination for hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, and fishing. Some of its landmarks include Linville Falls, Table Rock Mountain, Shortoff and Hawksbill Mountains, the Chimneys and Sitting Bear. It is often called the "Grand Canyon of North Carolina".
